Our Welcome Back Carnival was a big success with the
entire church family gathering for joyful fun and laughter under a brilliant blue sky. A big thank you to the 37 youth in
our Middle School Young Disciples and Senior High Youth Ministry for setting up and hosting the carnival.
CONFIRMATION TRIVIA NIGHT
It was an evening of cerebral shenanigans and fun when the Confirmation Class hosted its
annual trivia night. A thank
you to John Intorcio for servicer as our quiz master and Mary Rockwood for
provide the Richardson’s ice cream.
A big thank you as well to Meredith Turner and _________________ who
provide child care. Congratulations to the senior high Youth Ministry our 2012
trivia champions.
CONFIRMATION RETREAT
This year’s Confirmation Class retreat was held in Acton,
Maine on the shores of Moussam Lake. The weekend provided an opportunity for 11 youth and 5 adults to explore their faith
and experience a sense of Christian
fellowship surrounded by the beauty of the Maine woods.
LAWRENCE HABITAT
The Outreach Ministry’s newest hands
on mission opportunity is with the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. Twenty-two volunteers went in March to install insulation
and work on converting a vacant convert into affordable
condos. Families that receive the
condos work with the volunteers putting in 500 hours of sweat equity before
moving in to their new home.
STUDENT MINISTER KATE PINKHAM'S COLLATION
On May 1 we gathered to say thank you and
goodbye to our student
minister Kate Pinkham. Over the past two years Kate became a beloved part
of our church family as she touched our lives and our hearts with her gentle
kindness and faith filled caring. So, on this day there were some tears as we
said goodbye but also some tears of joy knowing that Kate is ready to
take her place as an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.
FAITH CIRCLE LUNCHEON
UCC has a vibrant Faith Circle
with spirit filled women who are truly young at heart. They are also dedicated works for the
church. Recently 23 of them
gathered at the Hillview Country Club for a luncheon that included a surprise
birthday cake for long time member Nancy Goddard.
COLLATION FOR BOB AND CARLTON
On January 30 a grateful
congregation gathered to thank two men for their many years of service to Union
Congregational Church. For the
past 15 years Bob Coffill has been our custodian and 31 years Carlton McKenzie
has been our treasurer par excellence!
Both of them retired this past fall and we couldn’t let their
retirements pass without a hearty thank you and a collation with lots of hearty
food!
YM CHRISTMAS PARTY
Food, fellowship and
fun were all
in abundance when our senior high Youth Ministry gathered for its annual
Christmas Party at the parsonage.
ADVENT DECORATING
The Saturday after
Thanksgiving is
a time to prepare for the start of Advent with the decorating of the
church. Many thanks to our Council
members, members of the Worship Ministry and other volunteers who put up the
wreathes, garland and the crèche in the sanctuary and outside the church.
ANTIQUE SHOW AND SILVER TEA
The
popular Traveling Antique Road
Show that you see on PBS gave rise to an idea to hold our own Antique Show and
Silver Tea. Our thanks to Nancy
Parsons and Alice Long for spearheading this successful event that provided an
afternoon of fellowship and entertainment. Those attending paid $5 to have an item appraised and we
raised over $500 for our mortgage reduction.
RUMMAGE SALE
Each fall and spring the women of Faith Circle
hold a rummage sale to help them support the church. It’s a lot of work but it also provides an opportunity for
fellowship and many hands do make light work. Both the women in Faith Circle and others volunteers from the congregation spend hours sorting the clothing and getting everything
ready. The 2010 Fall Rummage Sale raised $1,100 and so a big thank you to everyone who donated clothing and everyone
who helped with the set up and clean up.
WOMEN'S RETREAT
UCC’S Women’s Retreat was held
October 15 and 16 at the Craigville Conference Center on Cape Cod. The retreat was led by Amanda
Harmeling, a UCC member who is in discernment. Amanda is attending Boston University’s School of Theology
and hopes to be ordained in the near future. The theme of the retreat was “Uppity Women of the Bible” and
it proved to be a time for spiritual insight and enrichment.
YOUTH MINISTRY OUTREACH
An important part
of UCC’s Youth
Ministry experience is putting faith into action. The Youth Ministry did that by decorating pumpkings with the
residents of the McGlaughlin House.
The time together resulted in a lot of laughter and smiles and some
really creative Halloween creations.
YOUTH MINISTRY GO CART RACES
UCC’s senior
high Youth Ministry
is up an running again along with our very successful Young Disciples for
Middle School youth. Both groups
meet on Friday evenings. The Youth
Ministry meets from 7 to 9 p.m. and the Young Disciples meet from 6:30 to 8:30
p.m. Both groups seek to
offer an opportunity to experience an enriched faith through fellowship,
service and opportunities to grow as Christians. The Youth Ministry enjoyed this trip to grace go
carts.
CRIBBAGE TOURNAMENT
UCC is
blessed with some active
faith filled high school youth.
So, after a conversation with Rev. Hughes Ricky Schaffer, a senior at
North Reading High School, organized a Cribbage Tournament for Haiti. The tournament raised a little over
$500 for the ongoing relief efforts in Haiti and brought together young and old
for some good natured competition.
Congratulations to Sean Mack who was the winner followed by Carlton
McKenzie, 2nd place,
Jay Mainin 3rd place
and Arnie
Alhquist who came in fourth. The
prizes included two Red Sox tickets, a cribbage board signed by Red Sox 2nd
baseman Dustin Pedroia and a baseball signed by manager Terry Francona. A big thank you to Doug Lane for
helping out with the prizes for the tournament!
CAMPING TRIP
“Escape To The Mountains” was the theme of our all church camping trip the last weekend in June. The weather was a little damp but spirits were high as 54 children and adults ventured
to the Horton
Retreat Center in northern New Hampshire for a weekend of hiking, singing and fellowship in the midst of the beauty
of God’s creation.
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL 2008
This year the theme for our creative Summer Sunday School Ministry was Moses and the Ten Commandments. Each week the children
learned about a different commandment with activities like a pottery demonstration (You shall not have any graven images)
and a visit from a polygraph specialist to help us solve the mystery of the missing cupcake (You shall not lie) and a wedding
rehearsal complete with a tossing of the bouquet. (You shall be faithful in your marriage.) Our Summer Sunday School ministry
ended again this year with a Mission Trip Carnival.
A SILVER JUBILEE
On June 22 friends and family gathered to celebrate as Rev. Dr. Richard A. Hughes renewed his ordination vows on the 25th
anniversary of his ordination. Rev. Hughes was ordained to the Christian ministry on June 26, 1983 in the sanctuary of his
home the First Congregational Church in Whitman, Massachusetts.
AIR CONDITIONING PROJECT
You shouldn't have to be uncomfortable singing and praising God in church. That will not happen in the Union Congregational
Church now that the sanctuary is air conditioned. The decision to air condition the sanctuary means that not only will we
worship in comfort in the summer but parents will be able to watch their sons and daughters get married without sweltering
in the heat. Sacred goodbyes at funerals won't be diminished by having to sit in unbearable humidity.
TRIP TO THE BOSTON POPS
Our Ambassadors do a great job of coming up with fellowship opportunities. In May 34 of our members boarded a bus that took
them to Symphony Hall for a performance of the Boston Pops. An added treat was the chance to see John Williams who was the
guest conductor that evening.
MARGARET PARKER'S 100TH BIRTHDAY PARTY
April 27th was a very
special day for our church family. Following the worship service there was a
special collation in Fellowship Hall to mark Margaret Stevens Parker’s 100th birthday. Margaret is a long time member of the Union Congregational Church and there was great joy as we celebrated
with her that day.
TRIP TO THE SHRINE CIRCUS
The Ambassadors are charged with
providing fellowship opportunities for our church family and they do a great job of coming up with ideas that bring us together. For some people it might be a trip to the Boston Pops or a Women’s Retreat or
a Secret Pal. Our trip to the Shrine
Circus was a big hit and something that we will surely do again next year. While
we were waiting for the show to being Pokey the Clown stopped by to visit with us. Pokey
is a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church which is one of our sister churches in town.
LOBSTER BISQUE LENTEN LUNCHEONS
Every Friday during Lent Union Congregational
Church opens its door to the community for lobster bisque luncheons. People
even come from the surrounding communities to partake of the pastor’s lobster bisque, Nancy Parson’s homemade
breads and desserts that include Don Putney’s delicious apple cranberry crisp, to brownie sundaes to strawberry shortcake. The success of the luncheons can’t just be measured by the money they raise. The fellowship that people enjoy is equally important.
HOLY WEEK AND EASTER
Holy Week and Easter at Union Congregational
Church brought us from the palms and the joyful entry of our Lord into the Holy City
to the solitude of the Upper Room which we observed on Maundy Thursday with a Service of Tenebrae (Latin for Shadows). Then it was on to Good Friday and a benefit concert for Christian Community Service
and the joyful alleluias of Easter morning.
MARDI GRAS BRUNCH
The last Sunday before the start
of Lent was a festive time as we gathered for a Mardi Gras Pancake Brunch. The
event was hosted by our senior High Youth Ministry and our middle school Young Disciples.
Right after the church service that morning we went up to Fellowship Hall for pancakes, crafts and games.
YOUTH MINISTRY - ADULT SOFTBALL GAME
Our annual Youth Ministry –
Adult softball game on October 14 provided an afternoon of great fun and fellowship.
With the Red Sox battling to advance to the World Series our battle on the softball field at the Little School proved
to be equally spirited. The pictures and the narrative on the 2007 YM –
Adult Softball Game page will tell you who finally prevailed.
MISSION TRIP 2007
Our Habitat for Humanity mission
trip this year took us to Beattyville, Kentucky.
We spent a week volunteering with the Lee County Habitat for Humanity. It
was an experience with many grace filled moments. We were in the heart of Appalachia and we saw real poverty. The average yearly
family income in Lee County
is $10,200. We left Beattyville
with a deep love for the people we met and although it was a challenge experience for us…we knew when we left that one
of our future mission trips will bring us back to the rolling hills of eastern Kentucky
and the friends we will always remember in our hearts.
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL 2007
“Fruits of the Spirit”
is the theme for our Summer Sunday School this year and once again we’ve planned a variety of creative and engaging
activities to help our children learn about the qualities that makes us disciples of Jesus.
Each week the children will learn about patience, kindness, gentleness, joy, generosity, self-control, love, peace
and faithfulness. They’ll do that with a petting zoo (gentleness), a clown
minister (joy), a tomato garden (patience) and a Mission Trip Carnival complete with a dunk tank for the minister (generosity).
CHILDREN'S SUNDAY
On June 10th we enjoyed
another joyful and successful Children’s Sunday. The theme this year was
“Head for the Hills” and featured songs and skits and Bible verses based upon stories of Jesus that took place
on mountain tops. Everyone got into the spirit of the day which included some
unusual props and ways of celebrating Jesus’ love.
YOUTH MINISTRY AND YOUNG DISCIPLES
Union Congregational Church is blessed
with youth who are very involved in the life and work of the church. Each month
both youth groups spend time with the residents of the McGlaughlin House, an assisted living facility for adults who have
suffered head injuries. Both the youth and the residents look forward to the
visits and good friendships have evolved over the last couple of years. The youth
and residents have gone bowling, watched movies, carved jack-o-lanterns and this month decorated Easter eggs together.
ROMAN HOLIDAY
Our Roman Holiday dinner was a tremendous
success. The fundraiser and silent auction provided everyone with a fun and festive
evening with good fellowship and food. The money raised from the event was held
to support this year’s mission trip to the Lee County Habitat for Humanity outside Lexington Kentucky.
YM SKI RETREAT

The skiing was incredible and the
fellowship was even better on the Youth Ministry’s ski retreat to Mount Sunapee.
PAINTING THE CHURCH
Part of being a family of faith
is finding ways to put your talents to work. So, when the call went out for volunteers
to paint the church the response was truly gratifying. During the month of October
a group of dedicated workers gathered each Saturday morning and sometimes during the week to scrape and paint. Because of their efforts we saved several thousands of dollars that will now be able to used elsewhere.
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL 2006

THE GREAT I AM’S
That’s the theme of this year’s
Summer Sunday School and to make those sayings of Jesus come alive we had stained glass crosses (I am the light of the world)
, bread baking (I am the bread of life), tomato plants for the children to take home and grow (I am the vie and you are the
branches), a lamb (I am the Good Shepherd) and lots of other creative and fun crafts.
CHILDREN'S SUNDAY 2006

The theme for Children’s Sunday
on June 11 was “God’s Famous Fathers.” The service was a great
success all the way from the preschoolers rousing rendition of Father Abraham to the 6-8th grade’s modern
version of the Parable of the Prodigal Son which they called the Story of the Selfish Dude.
THE PASTOR'S 50TH SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY

On June 8th, 2006 Rev.
Hughes turned 50! So, to celebrate the occasion the congregation got together
(without him catching on) and threw him a surprise birthday party after church. It
was a time of fun, fellowship and lots of chocolate with a grateful pastor who let it be known that he feels incredibly blessed
to have such a wonderful and caring congregation. He then ended his remarks by
quoting the opening words to Robert Browning’s poem “Rabbi Ben Ezra”
“Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be.”
KATRINA OUTREACH

Following the devastation of Hurricane
Katrina UCC’s Outreach Ministry sprang into action. In addition to raising
$3,000 for Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi via donations from the congregation and a special lobster bisque supper
that was held at the church. The Outreach Ministry also successfully collected
tooth brushes, soap and other items for 200 health care kits that were sent to Church World Service.
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL

Who says Sunday School is boring? Not at Union Congregational
Church where this summer we're looking at Bible Stories with animals in them. From Adam and Eve and the serpent in the
Garden of Eden to Pharoah's dream of the 7 Fat Cows and the 7 Lean Cows, to Jesus the Good Shepherd and his entry into Jerusalem
on the back of a donkey. Cows, snakes, sheep, pigs and roosters. We've got them all this summer.
SECRET PALS

Our Secret Pals ministry was a success again this year giving people an opportunity to make
new friendships. Young and young at heart, new comers and long time members were paired up and sent "hints" to each
other to help their secret pals guess their identities. In May we gathered to find out who our secret pals were and to
enjoy some fun, food and fellowship.
