Summer Sunday School took a good look at Moses and the Ten Commendments.
#1 YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.
The children learned that the commandments means that God needs to be first in your life. To help the children understand
that a variety of fun activities were placed around Fellowship Hall including the cookie decorating which was popular.
Over in another corner of Fellowship Hall a laptop was set up so some of the children could explore online the world of Webkinz.
Meanwhile so of the children with a little energy to burn played a game of Twister.
Some of the other children decided to get creative with the stickers and coloring materials. In the center of Fellowship
Hall was a table with a Cross and a Bible. During the Children Message Rev. Hughes explained to the children that God wants
us to enjoy the fun things in life but that God needs to be at the center of our lives. If we put God at the center of our
lives everything else in our lives will be better.
Each week at the end of the class the children will put a tablet with that week's commandment on our Ten Commandments bulletin
board.
#2 NO GRAVEN IMAGES
Our plan to have a person with a pottery wheel demonstrate to the children didn’t workout at the last minute unfortunately.
The thought was that it would help the children understand how people use to make gods out of wood and stone and clay and
then worship them. Our God is too holy though to be made into a statue.
Even so, the children enjoyed using their modeling clay to make a few creations of their own.
July 13 was also Debbie Putney's last Sunday as our Christian Education director. So, there was a farewell reception for
her following the service. Debbie's 9 year tenure as Christian Education director so a lot of growth in that very important
ministry and we wish her well as she and her family begin a new life in Colorado.
#3 DO NOT TAKE THE LORD'S NAME IN VAIN
#4 KEEP THE SABBATH HOLY
The children learned that we need to honor God's name and one way we do that is by loving others and taking time to be with
God on Sunday. A Hunger Meal was held to help the children learn that there are people in the world who are hungry and need
our love and help.
In the Hunger Meal half the children feasted on pancakes and sausages while the other half of the children sat on the floor
and got a small bowl of rice. After the children learned that many people in the world do not get enough to eat the children
who got the rice were invited to also enjoy pancakes and sausages.
The children were also invited to count the number of times during the week that they heard someone say, "Oh my God"
which is taking God's name in vain because you're not really thinking about God when you say it. The child who came closest
to the total number of times the children heard that expression was given a gift certificate for Ryer's Ice Cream. The gift
certificate was won my Kyle.
#5 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER
The children made a list of parent "rules" that they didn't always like.
The children then made their own "baby" hard boiled eggs which they were invited to take care of for an entire week.
The "baby" eggs were to help them understand that it isn't always easy being a parent and that there's a reason
why God wants us to honor our parents.
#6 DO NOT KILL
A visit from the North Shore Animal Shelter helped the children remember that all life is sacred to God. In addition to the
kitten we had a rabbit and some ducks to pet.
#7 HONOR MARRIAGE
We had a wedding rehearsal during the Children's Message thanks to Rob and Gayle who agreed to practice their wedding vows.
Rob and Gayle were getting married in a couple of weeks and were glad to help out.
After the worship service the children and adults lined up to throw bird seed at the happy couple when they came out of the
church.
After that it was time for the bride to throw her bouquet.
The bride poses with the lucky child who caught the bouquet who said that she has no engagement plans at the moment.
From there the bride and groom went on to cut the cake.
Some people noticed that it wasn't just the bride who was dressed to the 9's that day.
#8 DO NOT LIE
#9 DO NOT STEAL
The Great Cupcake Caper meant the children had to play detective to find out who stole the cupcakes and who was lying about
it. Was it Miss Jenkins or Rev. Hughes?
To help the children solve the mystery Mr. Aldo Fantoni showed them how a lie detector works. After the introduction Mr.
Fantoni administered a polygraph test to Miss Jenkins.
